Middle Technical College High School at Portland welding student Cody Frensley won second place in the Welding Sculpture Competition at the Tennessee SkillsUSA State Competition held in Chattanooga.

Welding students had to design and create a sculpture using their welding skills. There were six competitors in the event.

Portland High School junior Frensley said, “My SkillsUSA experience was unforgettable. The extensive judging was well worth the time spent. My competitors and I enjoyed prejudging and questioning each step of each other’s art work. When the time came to be awarded in the final ceremony my insides were twisted from the excitement of my unknown placement. Once I saw my name appear on the second place screen I was clueless of what to feel or say.”

The award is significant to the school because the school is in its first year, and this is the first time to compete in the event.

Phillip Campbell, principal of MTCHS said, “I am extremely proud of Cody for the way he represented MTCHS. The creativity and ingenuity he displayed in his competition is a testament to the tremendous talent that he has. Mr. Carnahan (TCAT instructor) has done a great job in preparing Cody with the skills necessary to be successful in an event like this. I have no doubt that Cody will continue to improve his craft so that next year he will be standing on top of the medal stand.”
