Portland West middle faced their crosstown rival Portland East this past Monday and was able to come away with a hard-earned win, 36-20. East and West went back and forth for most of the first half. After the first quarter the game was tied at five a piece, and at the half West held the lead at 18-11.
Portland West went with full court pressure from the opening of the game and threw off the East offense. “West has a great team this year, they have great leadership and a really good offense I am proud of how our girls kept fighting tonight,” head coach Scott Steinbrecher stated.
Leading the offense on the night for Portland East Middle was Madison Hall with 14 points. “I was impressed with Madison’s game tonight, we just could not get enough shots off as a team and stop the West offense enough,” Steinbrecher commented.
West got off to a fast start in the second half and never let East get too close. “We started off the game very slow, scoring only five points in the first quarter was not acceptable for me, but we kicked it into another gear starting in the second half,” Head Coach Rachel James stated.
Coach James went on to state that she was impressed how Savanna Pippen rebounded tonight finally stepping up as she expected and leading the team in scoring with 12 points. Also scoring on the night for the West Panthers was Lillie Whitehead with 10, Lexie Williams with 7, Jaylen Presley with 3 and Aryanna Cadwell and Gretchen McGuire with 2 each.
“Going forward I would like our team to get the offense started sooner in the game,” James replied.
“Our girls played very hard tonight and will get better as the season goes on, we have a lot of work to do and this team will do what it takes,” Steinbrecher stated.
